Review: A Re-Read of The Giver
The Giver
by: Lois Lowry
4 stars
I read this book originally in high school and I fell in love. I've read it a number of times since, but the main reason I picked it up again now was that I just found out that the author actually wrote 3 other novels set in this universe and I'm so excited to read them. I heard that they aren't directly related (at least at first) but that they are all set in the same world and it all comes together in the end. I can't wait to read more about this world and to see what else Lois Lowry creates.
Regarding this book specifically--I love the concept of it. A futuristic world where there are no "bad" things (war, crime, etc.) but where the price of that is sameness and ignorance. Is it fair to ask one person to bear all of the history and beauty and awfulness of the world for the betterment of the society as a whole? Is avoiding pain and all the bad things worth giving up the beauty and wonder of the world? A truly beautiful book.
