What I liked: seeing the series come together and conclude in a happy/hopeful way.
What I didn't like: pretty much everything else.
It's so hard to review this book. I honestly think the ONLY reason I'm as generous as I am with my rating is because I loved The Giver so much and I loved parts of the rest of the books. Specifically the characters. But the story itself was a big MEH. And it felt LONG.
I loved the first part of the novel, seeing the action of The Giver through Claire's eyes, but there were almost too many details. I feel like that section could have been cut down a bit. Same with the middle section--there were parts that I enjoyed but overall it just felt like everything was moving s-o s-l-o-w and I found myself really drifting off during parts. The final section was fine. I really didn't like Trademaster as "evil" but whatever, I could live with it. It was just weird because the beginning of the series wasn't focused on "magic" or "powers" and by the end it felt like everyone had them.
ANYWAY, I'm super happy I read the series. But I can't say I'd recommend it to people. I kind of think everyone should read The Giver and leave it at that.
My review of Messenger is here.
