A Day in the Life

A Friday morning.

I'm awake.

Mommy wouldn't let me bring my water to bed last night. She said I could have it when I got up.

"Mommy! I want to get up! I want my water!"

Where is she? "Mommy! I want my water!"

What's taking so long? "Mommy!!!!"

Finally. "Good morning, Elena."

"I want my water."

"I know, can we go potty first and then--"

"Noooooooo I want my waaaaaaaaaaater!"

"Ok, Brandon is still sleeping, can you just--"

"I want my water!"

"Ok, Ok, Ok!  Here's your water. Now please be quiet and let's go potty."

I drink one sip of water. That's better. I don't want my cup anymore. I drop it. I don't want to go potty. I want to have a picnic.

"I don't have to go potty. I want to have a picnic."

"We can have a picnic after we go potty and change."

"NO! I want--"

"Elena, do you need a timeout, already?"

Why does she always say that? No I don't want a timeout...but if she takes away dessert...

"But I want dessert!"

"I didn't say anything about desser--"

"But I want dessert! Can I have dessert? I want it!"

"Yes, dessert. Potty, now."

"Fine."

A bit later, still morning...

I love playing picnic. It's my favorite. I like putting all my stuffed friends in a row and giving them food and...wait. What's Brandon doing? Playing with blocks? I want those. I want to build. I like building things. I like building houses and giraffes and pianos and--- "No! Brandon, no! Go away, I'M building! Go in your room!"

Oh no, here's mommy. I want dessert. I didn't do anything.

"I do nothing! I want dessert!"

"What's going on? Elena, I thought you were having a picnic?"

"No! I'm building something. NO BRANDON, DON'T TOUCH THOSE! THEY ARE MINE!"

"Elena, these are Brandon's blocks. He was building with them. If you want to build something, why don't you build with the other blocks? We can do it together--"

"No! I want these. I'll do it MYSELF. Tell Brandon to go play with his cars."

Brandon leaves. Mommy leaves. I get to build. I like building. I like building houses and giraffes and...wait. What's Brandon doing? Playing with my princess castle? NO NO NO NO NO NO...

"Get away from here Brandon, these are MINE! You go play with your cars! I want the princesses!"

No, not her again...

"Elena, you can't play with everything at once. You need to share. What are you playing with right now? Brandon can play with the toys, too."

Why doesn't she understand? I'm playing with ALL my toys. My stuffed animals are having a picnic, I'm building with the blocks and my princesses are watching. No, those are my books--

"Brandon! Leave my books alone! I want to read!"

Lunchtime

"I don't want peanut butter and jelly, mommy. I want turkey and cheese. Brandon wants peanut butter and jelly. I want turkey and cheese. I like turkey and cheese. Brandon doesn't like turkey and cheese. Mommy, do you like turkey and cheese? Turkey and cheese is my favorite. Peanut butter and jelly is Brandon's favorite. Daddy's favorite color is green. Like the Packers. You like purple, mommy, like the Vikings. I like purple, too, dark purple. Not light purple. And I like dark pink. Not light pink. Grammy likes blue. Mommy, are you making me turkey and cheese? I don't want peanut butter and jelly! Mommy?"

I wonder why she's not answering? Did she hear me?

"Mommy! Do I need to talk louder?"

"No, Elena I hear you. I always hear you."

"Do I get dessert?"

Naptime

Mommy says to be quiet. I am being quiet. I'm singing the quiet song.

Oh! The door opened! That surprised me. Maybe it's time to get up!

"Elena, you're not being quiet. Brandon is trying to sleep."

"I am being quiet! I'm singing the quiet song!"

"Elena, you're yelling the quiet song."

"No! It's the quiet song!"

"Please be quiet now. Do you have to go potty?"

"No."

"Ok. Get some rest."

Wait she's closing the door!

"I want to get up! It's time to get up!"

"No Elena, you've only been in here for 5 minutes. It's time to rest."

She leaves. Now what do I do? I start to sing. Oh! I'll stand upside down! I like doing that in my bed.

I do that for a long time. Now what? Oh! I'll climb to the top of my bed and jump from it onto my bed! This is so fun! I'm flying!

I'm on the floor. It hurts.

"MOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMY!" I'm crying.

She runs in. "Elena, what's wrong?! What did you do?"

"I do nothing. I have an owie."

"How did you get that owie?"

"I need a band-aid"

{a couple minutes later}

"Mommy, come get the band-aid! I take it off!"

{a couple minutes later}

"Mommy, I have to go potty!"

{a couple minutes later}

"Mommy, I want to get up! I need my water!"

Mid-Afternoon

I love going for walks. It's so fun. I can walk and run and skip and jump in puddles. And mommy lets me run in front! I have to stop when she says 'freeze' but then I get to go after we high-five. I love walks. I love playing outside. I love mommy.

Dinnertime

"Can I have dessert?"

Bedtime

"Ok, time to pick up and get ready for bed."

"I want to play for a couple more."

"The timer went off, it's time to pick up."

"I don't want to pick up! I want to get naked! Can I get naked?"

"We'll put on our pjs after we pick up."

"Fine. I like getting naked. I take off all my clothes and run around. It's my favorite. I can't wait to tell Teacher Beth at school how I like to run around naked and--"

"Elena, we don't need to tell Teacher Beth that, didn't you want to tell her about the movie you went to see in the theater?"

"The one with Elsa? And the ice? Frozen! I love Frozen! I love Elsa! I sat in a chair in the theater and it was comfortable. I liked the chair. The chair was my favorite. I'll tell Teacher Beth all about the chair!"

"And the movie?"

"And the chair!"

Lights Off, Final Moments

"I love you, Elena."
"I love you, Mommy."
"I love you more."
"I love YOU more, Mommy!"
"I love you mostest."
"I love YOU mostest!"
"Ok, you win. Goodnight."
"Ok, you win, too, Mommy. Goodnight."

They left. Oh! I have to go potty! And my tummy is grumbling, I need my water! And I need a band-aid! The light went on in the hall, who's out there? I hear Brandon, is it time to get up? I can't find Clifford! I need...
